Progress on the investment scene was reasonably stable, despite the global financial situation. The Minister of State in charge of Investments, Hon. Aston Kajara announced that UIA licensed 83 projects with a planned investment value of US $ 223.4 million and about 13,000 jobs are envisaged.

Mbale and Soroti Industrial Parks

 

The Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) is charged with the responsibility of setting up twenty two new Industrial Parks, nationwide, with a minimum of four new Parks every financial year.  In 2008/9, the locations were Mbarara, Mbale, Soroti and Gulu. In 2009/10 they will be setup at Kasese, Kabale, Masaka and Arua.

UIA’s involvement with higher institutions of learning

 

Prof. Maggie Kigozi, the Executive Director of Uganda Investment Authority is also one of the Directors of the Makerere University Private Sector Forum (MUPSF). The Forum provides avenues for the private sector to participate in University academic programmes like training and research and stand to benefit from the technological innovations generated by the University.

The Role of Uganda Investment Authority

 

UIA is the agency set up by an Act of Parliament (Investment Code 1991) to promote and facilitate private sector investment in Uganda.

 

The agency serves to:

Provide first hand information on investment opportunities in Uganda; Issue Investment Licenses; Assist in securing other licenses and secondary approvals for investors; Help investors to implement their project ideas through assistance in locating relevant project support services; Provide assistance in the acquisition of industrial land; Help to obtain work permits and special passes for investors and their expatriate staff; Arrange contacts for potential investors and organize itineraries for visiting foreign missions in the country; Assist investors in seeking joint venture partners and funding; Review and make policy recommendations to Government about investment.
